This is solid advice all the way around, but for those facing stroke recovery, it is essential, DO NOT GIVE UP! It took me a year and change to relearn to walk. It is now, 7yrs out, a small thing. It will never be a small thing if you quit. The adversity we face defines us more than anything else.
Of the things you can now control, your attitude is the singularly most important. Nothing will zap your enthusiasm to move forward as fast as a negative attitude about your progress.
ReplyDeleteMental discipline seems to be key in this process, especially discipline in maintainig optimism and hope. I have a feeling love is essential, too.
ReplyDeleteYes Hoopes it is! I have had many people who helped correct me when I started to stray or quit, too many to name individually. I have given up hope many times only to learn those around me would not accept such behavior. Eventually, I internalized much this external reliance, and i rely on it today!
ReplyDeleteI used to get tired very easily. I went from house builder at 6% body fat to invalid. It is important to reassess your goals in the light of having new limitations. Everything we perceive moves through our brains in the process of perception. Allowing more time to do things, or in my case, just not doing some things, is essential as your brain will take some time to get to know. Do not rely on your memory of how it was, that way lies frustration. I know it seems like all bad, all loss, but it is not. You now have an insight others do not, a glimpse of a reality many cannot fathom. Stephen Hawking has noted, “When one's expectations are reduced to zero, one really appreciates everything one does have” and , “It matters if you just don't give up”. The guy does have Isaac Newtons old job.
